polls give president obama an edge in three key swing states. once you isolate voters who are extremely interested in the election, the race is much closer. >> romney's tied when you focus on the inexpressibly intrigued. and he's up by two points when you count only voters who are psychotically engaged. folks, i have got my own source of polls, conservative blogger dean chambers who analyzed these polls favoring obama and then reached the scientific conclusion that they just didn't look right. chambers' work throws all polls into doubt now. even the internal ones i have taken of myself. i mean, the results say i'm not that excited about mitt romney, but as a conservative i feel like i should love him. maybe the sample size is too small or maybe i checked the wrong box and i'm actually latino, you know? >> it's not a good sign just six weeks from election day to bash the polls. >>> the first presidential debate is next week, next wednesday. looking back to the gop primary debates for a moment, there were probably times when you heard a candidate's response and thought, can that really be

remarkable thing when you go back and look at the state by state swing state polls, in florida or in wisconsin or in ohio or in iowa, the remarkable thing and the only thing that has changed in terms of the demographics is that barack obama is now tied with mitt romney or beating mitt romney among voters over 60. that's the very group that is the most skeptical of barack obama. they have been the hardest group for him to win over, but he is now winning them over and there's only one reason for that, it is medicare. and, you know, as much as i totally understand what howard fineman was saying, there was no other reason to pick paul ryan other than his budget. paul ryan was not the governor of a state, he can't deliver his home state from what we're seeing -- >> we know that now. >> you picked him because you wanted to tell the right we're going to take your ideology and take it to main street and then he didn't want to do it. he is trying to hide -- >> let me -- now you got into a little thought here about howard's thinking, my question to you, and it's a tough one, didn't he kn

. the new nbc news/"wall street journal"/marist poll has president obama up in all nine battleground states. in the same poll the president leads mitt romney 53% to 39% in nevada amongst folks who say they're going to vote early. while mitt romney leads 57% to 39% among election-day voters. the president's lead even big anywhere north carolina among voters, 57-41. how dot early voting numbers, how do they affect the race? >> they affect the race because you're trying to bank your votes. the people who are going to vote for you. the obama folks want those people to come out, turn out and vote right away. we've saw president obama campaigning in ohio earlier last week. and president obama had this message -- one, register to vote. and two when early voting starts, on tuesday october 2nd, go to the polls right now. they want to start banking the votes. it was a strategy in 2008. to prevent any type of october surprise, you want to get, if you're an obama voter go vote now and get that done. get it out of the way. >> you mentioned the october surprise, you look at the numbers closer than just a

of things today. eight months ago, in the state of the union speech, obama issued an appeal to congress to spend more federal money on construction projects that would generate jobs. what he said was, take the money we are no longer spending at war. use half of the to pay down our debt. use the rest to do some nation building right here at home. we pointed out in a fact check that night the fallacy of that idea. the idea that some kind of budget surplus is going to be created when you stop the wars is fiscal fiction. those wars have been primarily financed by borrowing. if you stop the wars, you do not have new money, you just have less debt being added. it does not treat a pool of ready cash. on top of that, the supposed savings of this supposed peace dividend is inflated because it is based on spending numbers that are extrapolated into the future that would come from the height of the intensity of the war and they do not follow the downward trend that it has been in reality. we pointed all that out in a fact check on a state of the union night. how does the administration react? thre
